A real drop of the hard stuff. The Twelve
Sullivans gave a spirited St Patrick’s Day performance at The
Holbrook Club in North Heath Lane,
Horsham. | Friday 26/03/04 The Twelve Sullivans /
The Holbrook Club / Horsham WHAT better way to celebrate St
Patrick’s Day than to go and see a true Irish folk band? Last
week the foot-stomping Twelve Sullivans played a lively set at
Horsham’s Holbrook Club in North Heath Lane. Their superb chaotic
performances were perfect for an evening when everyone was in high
spirits. And it certainly wasn’t the average gig – it included
hilarious drinking games and even a makeshift puppet show. They
belted out some traditional Irish jigs starting with ‘Greenland
Whale Fisheries’ and closely followed by ‘Highwaymen’ and ‘Star of
the County Down’. The Twelve Sullivans are an East Grinstead
based band set up by husband and wife team Jeff (guitar, lead
vocals) and Serena (accordion) Ingarfield about ten years
ago. From their performance at the club last week it was not
difficult to see why they had been booked back in immediately from
the previous year. Their set simply got better and better as the
night wore on and, as the Guinness flowed, the atmosphere steadily
grew and grew. After launching themselves into thumping
renditions of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ and ‘All For Me Grog’ the
audience were treated to a bizarre drinking game where anyone with a
full pint had to down it as fast as possible while the remainder of
the crowd knelt on the floor. By the end of the night (after
rounding off with ‘Leaving of Liverpool’ and ‘I’ll Tell Me Ma’)
there had been so much knee-slapping that people were hobbling out
of the doors! This was a great gig at an appropriate
venue. You just had to be able to stomach the black stuff.
